Particle board is used in numerous ways. Cabinets, tables, desks, and even some chairs are fashioned out of the particle board material. Many overseas manufacturers have developed a niche in making particular pieces of furniture and supplying them to retailers in the United States. However, this type of material does have some disadvantages that should be considered prior to purchase.
Loss of Color
Solid Hardwood Bookcases
Over time, items made out of particle board can lose their color. Some people try to remedy the situation by applying paint. Unfortunately, it requires a lot of paint to cover. This is due to the large amount of sawdust and wood shavings used to manufacture the products. These items do not have a good finish on them and soak up any type of paint that is applied instead of allowing the paint to remain on the surface.
Damage from Water
Cabinets and tables that are made from particle board are highly susceptible to damage from water. Mopping and ordinary spills that occur in daily life can lead to some serious damage. Particle board is known throughout the industry as being a weak form of wood.
Trouble with Refinishing
Most people are attracted to wood furniture because wood is usually easy to paint. However, there is a little bit of work involved when refinishing a wood item. Most notably, a good sanding will need to take place in order to get the surface ready to accept the paint. Particle board does not take well to sanding. In fact, sanding the wood enough for painting is almost impossible.
Extreme Weight
Due to the very nature of particle board construction, the item is very dense. This means that a large piece of furniture like a dresser or chest of drawers can be extremely heavy. For single parents, elderly citizens or students living on their own, moving around an object that weighs 200 pounds or more can be a touch chore. In contrast, solid wood furniture is much lighter and easier to move.
Dealing with this type of wood can be frustrating and quite costly in the long run. That is why more people are turning to natural wood furniture. Natural wood is durable and easy to care for. It is also quite easy to refinish with either colored paint or wood stain. The furniture color can be modified to fit a wide range of themes. This allows people to hang on to their furniture longer and get more enjoyment from their investment.
